Amprion and Elia award Siemens with HVDC contract for ALEGrO interconnector

•    Contract volume €273 million including a five-year maintenance agreement

•    Two converter stations at both ends of a 90 km underground cable with a capacity of 1000 MW

•    ALEGrO creates value for society: security of power supply, renewable energy and European market integration

Amprion and Elia have signed yesterday with the winning contractor Siemens who will deliver the two high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) converter stations for the first electricity interconnector between Germany and Belgium. The order volume for Siemens including a five-year maintenance agreement amounts to €273 million. The German Transmission System Operator Amprion and the Belgian Transmission System Operator Elia join forces to deliver the Aachen Liège Electricity Grid Overlay (ALEGrO), a major infrastructure project, part of the European electricity highway system. Using 90 km long underground cables ALEGrO will connect the Belgian and German high-voltage electricity systems. The converter stations will transform AC to DC and DC back to AC on the other side of the link. Siemens will be responsible for the system design and the supply, installation and commissioning of all components for both converter stations using HVDC Plus technology, which is highly controllable and brings operational benefits to both transmission systems. ALEGrO is scheduled to commence commercial operation in 2020.

The European Commission has designated the ALEGrO project as one of its projects of common interest. ALEGrO contributes greatly toward helping the European energy markets grow closer together. The renewable energy sources should also encounter fewer bottlenecks on the grid and maximize their production. The high voltage link can transport energy up to 1,000 MW to either Belgium or Germany with a high degree of controllability of the energy flow. It will transport enough electricity to power half a million homes.

ALEGrO will increase energy security for both countries and support the integration of renewable energy. On top of the additional transport capacity ALEGrO is offering, the fast control and protective intervention in the power converter will allow the TSOs to adjust the volume of electricity and flow direction, for a better efficiency of the electricity grid.

On September 29 Elia and Amprion already signed a €125 million contract with Silec Cable to build the 90km underground cable.

Amprion und Elia beauftragen Siemens mit Umrichtern für HGÜ-Verbindung ALEGrO

•    Auftragsvolumen von 273 Millionen Euro inklusive Servicevertrag

Amprion und Elia haben mit Siemens einen Vertrag über die Lieferung zweier Umrichterstationen zur Hochspannungsgleichstromübertragung (HGÜ) für die erste Stromverbindung zwischen Deutschland und Belgien unterzeichnet. Das Auftragsvolumen beläuft sich inklusive eines Wartungsvertrags über fünf Jahre auf 273 Millionen Euro. Der deutsche Übertragungsnetzbetreiber Amprion und der belgische Übertragungsnetzbetreiber Elia wollen gemeinsam das große Infrastruktur-Projekt ALEGrO (Aachen Liège Electricity Grid Overlay) als Teil der europäischen Stromautobahn realisieren. Mit einem 90 Kilometer (km) langen Erdkabel wird ALEGrO die belgischen und deutschen Wechselstrom-Hochspannungsnetze miteinander verbinden. Die Umrichterstationen werden an einem Ende der Leitung Wechselstrom in Gleichstrom und am anderen Ende diesen Gleichstrom wieder in Wechselstrom umwandeln. Siemens wird für das Systemdesign sowie für die Lieferung, Installation und Inbetriebnahme aller Komponenten beider Umrichterstationen verantwortlich sein. Zum Einsatz kommt dabei die HGÜ Plus-Technik von Siemens, die sich problemlos regeln lässt und betriebliche Vorteile für beide Übertragungssysteme bietet. ALEGrO soll 2020 den kommerziellen Betrieb aufnehmen.

Die Europäische Kommission stuft das ALEGrO-Projekt als eines ihrer Vorhaben von gemeinsamem Interesse („Project of Common Interest“) ein. ALEGrO trägt maßgeblich dazu bei, dass die europäischen Energiemärkte näher zusammenwachsen. Dadurch soll es weniger Engpässe im Netz geben und die Produktion erneuerbarer Energie soll ausgebaut werden können. Die Hochspannungsleitung kann bis zu 1.000 Megawatt (MW) nach Belgien oder Deutschland übertragen, wobei der Energiefluss regelbar ist. Sie wird ausreichend Strom zur Versorgung einer halben Million Haushalte transportieren können.

Am 29. September haben Elia und Amprion bereits einen Vertrag in Höhe von 125 Millionen Euro mit Silec Cable für die Verlegung des 90 km langen Erdkabels unterzeichnet.
